Tolls in Turkey
Turkey is a popular destination in Europe for tourists as well as a transit country from Europe to Asia. Travellers with their own car or campervan should inform themselves in advance about costs and toll fees.
Toll charges in Turkey are usually calculated based on the distance travelled and the vehicle class. The exact rates can vary depending on the road, bridge, or tunnel. Currently, you cannot purchase a vignette for Turkish motorways.
Toll roads
In Turkey, the following motorway sections are subject to tolls. Especially on the highways around Istanbul, a fee is required. The motorways are abbreviated with an "O" for Otoban:
- O-3: Edirne - Istanbul (Mahmutbey)
- O-4: Istanbul – Bolu
- O-4: Istanbul – Ankara
- O-32: Cesme – Izmir
- O-31: Izmir – Aydin
- O-52: Adana/Cayhan – Sanliurfa
- O-51: Iskenderun – Ceyhan
- O-21: Nigde – Mersin
Special toll
- Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and Bogazici Bridge
- Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge
- Ozmangazi Bridge
- Avrasya Tünel (Eurasia Tunnel)
- Bosphorus Bridge
It is forbidden to drive through the Eurasia Tunnel with motorcycles or cars with trailers.
Toll-free motorways
In Turkey, all motorways and national roads are exempt from tolls. Toll fees are only applicable on motorways based on the distance travelled.

Payment
There are different types of tolls in Turkey, depending on the type of route travelled and the vehicle class. Here you will find all the ways in which you can pay the tolls:
Manual payments
You can pay with your credit card or cash. Please note that you must pay in Turkish Lira in the country.
Electronic payment
You have the option to pay with two electronic toll systems:
HGS system
Turkey has a toll system called HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi). The HGS system was developed to make the flow of traffic at toll booths and transport more efficient.
To use the HGS system, vehicle owners must attach an HGS tag to the windscreen of their vehicle and synchronise the vehicle registration number with the vehicle class and tag. The HGS card is equipped with an RFID chip that is linked to the vehicle owner's account.
When you pass a toll station with the HGS box, the RFID chip is automatically recognized, and the corresponding toll amount is debited from your HGS account. The HGS card can be topped up using most bank accounts. If your card balance is insufficient, you will be informed via your user account and asked to top it up again.
The HGS system is particularly advantageous for tourists from abroad without a Turkish bank account.
OGS system
The OGS system (Otomatik Gecis Sistemi) works with a toll box that can only be linked to a Turkish bank account. It is therefore only recommended for locals and commercial traffic.
At a few toll stations you have the option to pay only with the HGS system or OGS system. Therefore, we recommend buying an HGS or OGS device at one of the offices at the motorway exit/entrance.
Does Turkey have a vignette?
The Turkish motorway fee is paid through tolls. The amount of this charge depends on the distance travelled and the category of your vehicle. Neither electronic vignettes nor classic adhesive vignettes are offered.
How is the toll controlled?
Compliance with toll laws in Turkey is electronically recorded or through toll stations. Extra fees may often be required on-site before toll tunnels or bridges, which are not included in the general motorway fees. Random checks may also be conducted by the local toll company.
Fees
If you drive past a toll station without an HGS sticker, you have 7 days to pay the charges incurred.
You have the option of purchasing an HGS sticker and paying the outstanding motorway toll within 7 days. After the 7 days, the fine will be 11 times the amount of the longest toll fee.
Which vehicles are exempt from the toll?
As a rule, all vehicles wishing to drive on Turkish motorways must pay a toll. However, the following vehicles are exempt from motorway tolls according to Article 7 of the Turkish Toll Regulation:
- Vehicles of the toll company
- Civil defence vehicles
- Fire engines
- Ambulances
