Toll Sweden: Toll charges overview
Sweden does not charge tolls on motorways. However, there is a city toll and a bridge toll. The charges vary depending on the time of day and vehicle type. They can be paid using the EasyGo electronic toll system. Tolls may also apply to travellers from Norway and Denmark, as the toll in Sweden is part of a wider system of tolls in Scandinavia. Nevertheless, travelling through Sweden by car offers the opportunity to discover the country's diversity, including the capital Stockholm and the countryside in the north.
Toll roads
There are no tolls on motorways in Sweden. The so-called city toll is limited to the use of certain roads in the cities of Gothenburg and Stockholm. There is also a bridge toll, which is charged for the Öresund, Sundvall and Motala bridges.
City toll
The Swedish congestion charge covers the city centre and some suburbs of Gothenburg and Stockholm. The price varies depending on the time of day and only applies on working days. During peak times, the charge is usually higher than outside these times, however, it does not apply on public holidays and in July. Cars, lorries, and motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight of 14 tonnes are subject to tolls. The charge applies equally to local and foreign vehicles, while motorbikes, buses, emergency vehicles and mobile cranes are exempt.

Bridge toll
The bridge toll is charged for the Öresund Bridge, a bridge-tunnel combination that runs from Malmö in Sweden to the Danish capital Copenhagen. The bridge is open all year round and can be used by motorbikes, cars, motorhomes, buses, and lorries. The toll can be paid at toll stations along the bridge. There are different toll rates depending on the type of vehicle and direction of travel. The costs also depend on whether you are travelling in the direction of Stockholm or Copenhagen. The Sundsvall and Motala bridges are also subject to tolls.

Toll charges and payment
Toll charges
Compared to other countries in Europe, the toll charges in Sweden are rather high. The current price is always displayed when entering the motorway. In general, the EasyGo electronic toll system offers a simple option for paying tolls and ferry charges in Sweden, as well as in Denmark and Norway. It can be used on various bridges and roads as well as on ferry connections between Denmark and Germany. The system also offers discounts.
City toll payment
In Sweden, the congestion charge is levied electronically. Vehicle licence plates are automatically recorded by cameras and the toll is subsequently collected by means of an owner identification system. It is therefore not necessary to stop at special toll stations or to take a ticket when driving onto certain roads. Foreign licence plates are determined by the Epass24 agency. The invoice is sent by post at the end of the month and must be paid by the following month. It is also possible to set up a customer account with Autopay, from which the toll fee is debited by direct debit.
Bridge toll payment
There are various ways to pay the toll on the Öresund Bridge. At the toll booths you can pay by credit card or use the BroBizz electronic billing system, which is particularly recommended for frequent users. You can also buy a ticket online and thus save part of the fee or use the Autopay account. Payment for the Motala Bridge is like the congestion charge. Vehicles are photographed and the owners receive an invoice.
Does Sweden have a vignette?
Vignette regulation for cars
Sweden does not have a vignette for cars but uses a distance-based toll system called the Swedish Transport Agency's Electronic Fee Collection (SEMA), where charges are calculated based on the distance travelled and the vehicle's emission class. A vignette is only required for lorries.
Vignette regulation for lorries
Commercial vehicles and vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle weight of 12 tonnes or more also require an electronic Eurovignette to use the motorways. The Eurovignette is a charge levied in Scandinavia for the use of motorways. It can be purchased for different periods of time, such as one day, one week, one month or one year.
Who monitors the toll in Sweden?
In Sweden, the toll is recorded and checked electronically using cameras or On-Board Units (OBUs). The cameras record the vehicle's licence plate number and compare it with the toll data. The OBUs determine the distance travelled and the emission class via GPS and automatically register in the toll system.
Fines and penalties
The toll is administered and monitored by the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen). Fines and penalties can be imposed for non-payment, such as a late payment fee of SEK 300 (approx. £ 23.00) and an additional fee of SEK 500 (approx. £ 38.40). If the toll debt exceeds SEK 5,000 (approx. £ 380.00), the use of the vehicle may be prohibited.
Which vehicles are exempt from the toll?
In Sweden, there are certain vehicles that are exempt from the toll. These include motorbikes, buses, emergency vehicles and mobile cranes. However, there are also other exceptions:
- Electric cars, electric motorbikes, and electric buses
- Vehicles with special exemptions issued by the Swedish authorities (e.g. vehicles used by people with disabilities or vehicles used for certain professional or public services)
- Agricultural vehicles such as tractors or agricultural trailers
Tolls in neighbouring countries
The following neighbouring countries of Sweden also have mandatory tolls to finance and maintain their motorways:
