Toll in Norway: Everything about costs, payment methods and transponders
In Scandinavia, tolls are charged on various roads and bridges, which are billed electronically via Epass24. Norway is a popular destination for tourists from Denmark and Sweden, who can also benefit from the toll systems.
For longer stays, it is recommended to enter a contract with chip usage to receive discounts. You can either use an AutoPASS chip or an AutoPASS box. The AutoPass chip is an electronic chip that is attached to the windscreen, while the AutoPASS box is a separate electronic device in the vehicle. Both methods allow electronic payment of tolls.
Toll roads
There are several toll roads, bridges, and tunnels in Norway. Some notable examples are:
-
The Oslofjord Tunnel
A tunnel that connects Oslo with the surrounding regions and charges a toll
-
The Svinesund Bridge
A bridge on the Norwegian-Swedish border that charges a toll for use
-
The Atlantic Ocean Road
A famous coastal road known for its spectacular bridges, which also charges a toll
Toll fees depend on the type of vehicle, season, and payment method.
City toll in Norway
Some Norwegian cities charge a city toll for driving in certain city areas. The fee depends on the city, time of day and type of vehicle and was introduced to regulate traffic and reduce pollution. Motorcycles are usually exempt from the city toll.

Vehicle type | Description |
---|---|

Group | Vehicles |

Toll charges and payment
When passing through Norwegian toll stations, vehicles are electronically recorded. Vehicles that are not registered in Norway will receive a bill by post from Epass24. You can register your licence plate in advance with Epass24 along with your e-mail address to access invoices online, make payments and view due dates. Vehicles that are registered in Norway, on the other hand, make payments directly to the toll authorities.
Payment methods
Fees can be paid through electronic payment systems such as AutoPASS or EasyGo, online through the official website of the Norwegian Toll Authority, via third-party mobile apps, or at certain toll stations in cash or by credit card.
Contract with chip usage
If you stay in Norway for more than 2 months, you can benefit from a contract with chip usage called “brikke”, which offers a discount on the toll. However, since 2022 it is no longer possible to conclude a contract for transporder usage directly with Norwegian toll companies. Instead, contracts for the use of the Tansporder and the associated chip must be concluded with the issuing companies under their own contracts. The chip is then sent by post and payment is made either by invoice or by credit card.
Does Norway have a vignette?
The toll in Norway is paid without a vignette or ticket. The AutoPASS system enables automatic payment of fees. Only at a few toll stations in the country is payment still possible in cash or by credit card. Therefore, there is no physical vignette that must be affixed to the vehicle.
How are tolls controlled in Norway?
In Norway, tolls are electronically recorded and controlled through toll stations, automatic toll bridges and the AutoPASS system with a chip. Vehicles are recognised automatically by cameras or other sensors at the toll stations. Random checks can also be conducted. Offences can be punished with fines or penalties. It is recommended to follow the toll rules carefully and to pay any bills on time.
Fines
In case of lack of valid payment or missing AutoPASS registration at Norwegian toll stations, fines and additional fees may be due. As there are usually no physical toll stations in Norway, vehicles must be equipped with an electronic toll solution such as Epass24 or an AutoPASS chip to pay the toll.
Which vehicles are exempt from tolls?
Certain vehicle types are exempt from the toll in Norway. These include:
- Electric vehicles: Vehicles that are powered exclusively by electricity
- Hydrogen vehicles: Vehicles powered by hydrogen as a fuel
- Low Emissions Vehicles: Vehicles with particularly low emissions, such as those with European Emission Standard 6
Tolls in neighbouring countries
The following neighbouring countries of Norway also have compulsory tolls to finance and maintain their motorways:
