Motorway Toll in Italy
A toll depending on the kilometres driven and the vehicle category is charged on almost all motorways in Italy. These toll roads are marked with a green motorway symbol.
Italy does not offer adhesive vignettes or digital vignettes, but only route-based tolls.
Toll roads
Tolls are mandatory on motorways marked with a green traffic sign.
Closed system
Italian toll operators work with a closed system. Drivers arrive at a toll station, take a ticket, and pay the toll costs at a toll station after leaving the motorway. The costs are determined based on the kilometres driven and the vehicle class.
Open system
In the open system, a flat rate is charged at each toll station. The open system is mainly used in urban centres to avoid traffic jams.

Free-Flow-System
The FreeFlow model is a new toll system on the motorways A36 (near Milan), A59 and A60. It enables vehicles to be registered automatically. Free Flow electronically recognises vehicle number plates and vehicle categories. In this way, traffic jams can be avoided.

Toll charges and payment
Toll charges
At each motorway exit, you will receive a toll ticket at a ticket machine, on which the distance travelled, and the vehicle category are recorded. The toll can then be paid in cash or by credit/debit card at each motorway exit.
Unfortunately, the exact toll cannot be determined in advance. The average toll on Italian motorways is approximately € 0.07 or £ 0.06 per kilometre.

You have various payment options for the toll in Italy.
Closed system
The closed system provides you with 3 options for paying your fees.
White lane
In the white lane you can only pay in cash or by credit card.
Blue lane
In the blue lane you can only pay with credit cards, EC cards and Viacard.
Yellow lane
If you are driving in the (yellow) Telepass lane, you are most likely in the wrong lane. This lane is for Telepass users only.
If you are in the wrong lane and cannot pay the toll, do not turn around. Turning or reversing at toll stations is punishable by a severe fine. Stop and press the help button, after which you will receive a receipt from the machine ("Mancato pagamento") which you must pay within 15 days.
Free-flow and open system
For systems without toll stations, the toll due must be paid within 15 days by credit card or bank transfer.
With Aspi you can pay the toll afterwards.

What is the Telepass in Italy?
The Telepass is a system in Italy that works with the help of an electronic device known as the toll box. The toll box allows you to pass through toll stations without stopping and with little waiting time. It is a satellite-based service operated by the Italian motorway company ATA (Autostrada dei Flori). To use the service, you must install the Telepass toll box in your vehicle. The Telepass Italy is connected to the toll stations via the radio or mobile phone network.
You can also use the Telepass to pay at selected petrol stations and car parks. You can manage the credit on your toll box via your account using the Telepass app. With the Telepass, you have a simple and fast payment method at Italian toll stations. In addition, the toll box is also accepted as a payment method for motorway tolls in France, Spain, and Portugal.
Congestion Charge
A vehicle toll is usually charged to finance and maintain a country's roads and motorways. In contrast, the congestion charge is a fee to prevent or reduce congestion and pollution in city centres. The congestion charge is levied in three major Italian cities: Palermo, Milan, and Bologna.
Palermo
In Palermo, a congestion charge is levied on weekdays from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. A daily/monthly ticket is available for € 5 (£ 4.31) or € 20 (£ 17.22). Petrol and diesel vehicles of emission classes Euro 0, 1, 2 and 3 are not permitted to enter the city during the above-mentioned times. Motorcycles are exempt from the toll.
Tickets are available online from the Italian Automobile Club ACI or the Palermo Mobility Centre.
Milan
The congestion charge in Milan applies to the AREA C environmental zone in the historic city centre. You need a toll ticket for AREA C from Monday to Wednesday and on Thursdays from 7.30 am to 6 pm and on Fridays from 7.30 am to 7.30 pm. Euro 0 petrol vehicles and Euro 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 diesel vehicles are not permitted to enter the Old Town at the times specified unless a particulate filter is installed. This also applies to vehicles (with or without trailers) that exceed an overall length of 7.5 metres. Electric or hybrid vehicles do not require a ticket.
You can purchase the ticket at newspaper kiosks, at public transport machines (ATM points), at Tabacci shops, in participating car parks and at parking machines.
Bologna
In Bologna, you need an environmental ticket from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. if you want to travel in the Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL). You can obtain this ticket at public transport sales points. Motorcycles are exempt from the environmental toll.
How the toll is monitored in Italy
Tolls in Italy are checked using a toll ticket or the Telepass.
Fines and penalties
Toll evaders who do not pay the toll within the 15-day period receive a letter from the Italian collection agency Nivi SpA and must pay the toll with a high reminder fee. In addition, turning and reversing at toll booths is strictly prohibited and is punishable by a fine of up to € 6,000 (£ 5,167.20).
