Toll in Iceland

Around 2 million tourists decide to visit the North Atlantic island of Iceland every year. The best time to see the Northern Lights is in February, October, and during the summer months.

The best way to explore the island is through the four-lane expressways. Many travellers opt for a rental car. Almost all road sections in Iceland are toll-free.

Toll roads

To preserve Iceland's beautiful nature, the state has decided against building new motorways. Iceland only has a few well-developed roads. Exceptions are four-lane expressways that are intended to improve infrastructure.

A toll is only charged for the Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel. The Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel is 7.5 kilometres long and shortens the distance between Akureyri and Húsavík by 16 kilometres. No toll has been charged for the Hvalfjarðargöng underwater tunnel since September 2018.

  • Vaðlaheiðargöng: Toll required since the end of 2018
  • Hvalfjarðargöng: No toll obligation since September 2018
