Vignette Austria

Motorway tolls in Austria are collected through digital vignettes and conventional adhesive vignettes. The motorway vignette is linked to a vehicle registration number and can be purchased online from ASFINAG.

Toll roads

Vignettes have been compulsory on almost all motorways and expressways in Austria since 1997. Additionally, a separate section toll is charged on some other motorway sections.

A section toll is charged on the following motorway sections:

  • A 9 Pyhrn motorway Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnel
  • A 10 Tauern motorway and Klatschberg tunnel
  • A 11 Karawanken motorway
  • A 13 Brenner motorway
  • S 16 Arlberg expressway

Exceptions

There are some toll-free motorways and expressways as exceptions:

  • A1 West motorway (border crossing Walserberg to Salzburg-Nord), province of Salzburg
  • A12 Inntal motorway (border crossing Kiefersfelden to Kufstein-Süd), Tyrol
  • A14 motorway (Hörbranz border crossing to Hohenems), Vorarlberg. Vignette exemption applies from (coming from the south) or junction 23 Hohenems Diepoldsau
  • A26 (Linz motorway - currently still under construction, including the new Danube suspension bridge), Upper Austria. You will only need a digital vignette after the completion of the entire A26 motorway and connection to the A7 motorway.

Regulations for different types of vehicles

In Austria, the vignette regulations are divided into two categories. All vehicles with a permissible total weight of 3.5 tonnes require a toll sticker. Quads are categorized as multi-track motor vehicles and therefore require a car vignette.

Please note that, despite a valid vignette, you may need to pay an extra digital section toll if you want to cross certain tunnels and mountain passes.

Trailers

Trailers do not require a vignette on Austrian motorways. Only the towing vehicle requires a vignette, as long as it does not exceed the permissible total weight of 3.5 tonnes.

Campervans

Campervans that do not exceed the permissible total weight of 3.5 tonnes require a vignette. Campervans over 3.5 tonnes must pay a route-based toll and be equipped with the Go-Box for campervans.

What is the GO-Box or the GO toll?

The GO toll is a toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (campervans, lorries, and buses) on motorways in Austria. The toll is determined by factors such as the distance travelled (measured using a GPS tracker), the number of axles, the time of day, and the emissions output of your vehicle. You can apply for the toll at GO-Maut.

Fines

Anybody driving without a valid e-vignette risks heavy fines. We therefore recommend buying a vignette for your category before you start your journey. In addition, you should check the validity of the electronic vignette before and after purchase so that you can act quickly if there are any problems.

How are tolls controlled in Austria?

In Austria, valid vignettes are monitored through manual checks and camera systems. Mobile control systems regularly change their locations.

What penalties do I face without an e-vignette?

If you drive on toll motorways in Austria without a valid e-vignette, you will be asked to pay a replacement toll. The fine is approximately £ 104 for cars or campervans and approx. £ 57 for motorcycles. If you manipulate your vignette (e.g. change the validity date), the replacement toll will be doubled. Accordingly, the fine for cars and campervans is approx. £ 208 and for motorcycles approx. £ 113. If the replacement toll is not paid, further administrative fines of £ 260 - £ 2.597 will be added.

Fines for motorcycles

What penalties do I face without paying the toll?

People who drive on toll roads without having paid for them will be given the opportunity to pay the toll within 5 hours and 100 kilometres at a GO point of sale. An incorrectly stated number of axles can be paid within 96 hours at an active GO-Box. If you do not pay this charge retrospectively, a replacement toll will be due. If there is no active GO-Box or the balance is too low, a fine of about £ 208 will be charged. If the number of axles is stated too low, a fine of about £ 104 will be charged. If this replacement toll is not paid, further administrative fines of about £ 260 to £ 2.597 will be imposed.

Can I transfer my Austrian vignette?

Please note whether you have registered an adhesive vignette or a digital vignette. The adhesive vignette cannot be converted into a digital form, and vice versa.

Adhesive vignette

The adhesive vignette is only valid for one vehicle (vignette on the windscreen). You can only receive a new replacement vignette if your vehicle is completely damaged or if your windscreen is broken.

E-Vignette

You only have the option to change your license plate for annual vignettes and annual toll cards.

How to correctly affix the adhesive vignette

Please note that these must be properly affixed. In Austria, strict adherence to the guidelines is enforced.

  • The vignette must be affixed only to the inside of the windscreen (vignettes affixed to the rear window or side window are considered invalid!)
  • Stick the vignette behind the rearview mirror or in the upper left corner of the windscreen (avoid the tinted strip if present)
  • Vehicles without a windscreen must have the vignette affixed to a part that is difficult to replace, e.g. on a motorcycle on the fuel tank (excluding the tank cap) or the fork
  • The vignette must be affixed to the windscreen without any additional aids (do not use adhesive strips or anything else)
  • On the back of the vignette, you will find instructions for correct placement
  • Please note that expired vignettes must be removed regularly

Who is exempt from a vignette?

Currently, all vehicles with a Ukrainian licence plate are exempt from the vignette requirement and the section toll. Vehicles, regardless of nationality, are also exempt from the section toll and vignette requirement if they are transporting refugees as part of a humanitarian organization. These conditions also apply to lorries and buses. Before starting the journey, a form for toll exemption must be filled out, which can be obtained from ASFINAG.

Other vehicles exempt from the vignette requirement are:

  • Persons with disabilities in possession of a disability pass with the additional notation "Impracticality of using public transportation". You can obtain a free digital vignette for your vehicle from ASFINAG, if the licence plate is registered in your name and you meet the criteria mentioned above. This exemption does not apply to vehicles from abroad!
  • Military vehicles
  • Emergency vehicles (Attention! The blue light - headlight or warning light - must be visible on the vehicle)
  • Public security services, financial administration, and judicial custodianship.
  • Peacekeeping operations of international organizations (UNO, SFOR, IFOR)

Tolls in neighbouring countries

The following neighbouring countries of Austria also have compulsory tolls to finance and maintain their motorways. More information on the motorway vignette of the neighbouring countries and its validity can be found here:
