European Capital of Culture 2025
Nova Gorica & Gorizia - Two cities, one cultural capital
Two cities, two countries - one European Capital of Culture! For the first time ever, two cities from two different countries will share the title of ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2025: Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy. Once separated by a border, they now stand together for a united Europe and cultural cooperation.
From a divided border town to a united city of culture
Until the end of the Second World War, today's Nova Gorica, together with Gorizia, formed a single town that belonged to Italy. However, after the Peace of Paris in 1947, the border was redrawn: Gorizia remained with Italy, while Yugoslavia founded a new town on the Slovenian side - Nova Gorica. For decades, there was a strict separation here, which was only finally abolished with the Schengen Agreement in 2007. Since then, the two towns, which lie right next to each other, have been growing closer together again. This unity is particularly visible at the Transalpina square, a symbol of their shared history and future. In 2025, Nova Gorica and Gorizia will celebrate their cultural ties as the first cross-border European Capital of Culture.
‘GO! 2025’ = Borderless - The official cultural programme
GO! 2025 is the cross-border cultural project of Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy), the first European Capital of Culture to celebrate the diversity and unity of Europe across national borders. The programme combines contemporary art, film festivals, dance performances, electronic music and discussions on technology and innovation. The aim is to bring together Italian, Slovenian and international creativity.
An overview of all events, festivals and highlights can be found in the official GO! 2025 events calendar.
