Camping and Hiking Rules in Spain

  • Wild camping on the Spanish mainland is not universally prohibited but generally requires local authority permission.
  • Wild camping is not allowed on private property, in nature reserves, or within 100 meters of water bodies.
  • Due to the high risk of forest fires, open fires in Spain are only allowed at designated fireplaces.
  • After leaving, you must not leave any trace in nature. Take all trash with you, do not pick plants, and leave animals undisturbed.
  • Depending on the region, you may stay at the same place for a maximum of 1 to 3 nights, so you should look for a new location every day.
  • With a motorhome, you can freely park and stay overnight anywhere parking is allowed, but you must not display camping behavior, such as setting out furniture or using leveling blocks.
  • Wild camping is strictly forbidden in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera, and Ibiza) and the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro).

Destinations for an Adventure Holiday in Spain

Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada ("snow-covered mountain range") is a mountain range in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. It is the highest mountain range on the Iberian Peninsula, making it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. The most well-known ski runs are located at the Sierra Nevada Ski Station on Pico del Veleta, the second highest peak in the Sierra Nevada.

In the summer, the Sierra Nevada is ideal for exploring by mountain bike. The suggested routes for mountain bikers range from easy to challenging, ensuring there is a suitable tour for every level of experience and fitness. With some luck, you might even spot the rare Iberian ibex in the mountains.

At the foot of the Sierra Nevada lies the Canales Reservoir, with its sparkling blue water. The lake is not only a spectacular sight itself but also serves as the starting point for various hiking routes into the mountains.

One of the most beautiful views of the Canales Reservoir can be enjoyed from the aptly named viewing platform, Mirador del embalse de Canales.

Catalonia

The region of Catalonia in northeastern Spain is characterized by its diverse landscape. It is especially known for the Costa Brava, which features impressive rocky massifs in the north and picturesque sandy beaches in the south. This area also includes the famous holiday and party destination, Lloret de Mar.

You don't have to spend your entire holiday on the Costa Brava lounging on the beach or in nightclubs and bars. The coast also offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the hotels can find a peaceful spot to camp outdoors at one of the region's campsites.

In northern Catalonia, the Catalan Pyrenees present a starkly different landscape. Along the border with France and Andorra, you can find some of the country's most imposing peaks. Nestled among these is the idyllic Vall de Núria valley.

The Catalan Pyrenees are a true paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. In the Jardins Artigas gardens, you can discover a stunning blend of nature and architecture. Another popular hiking destination is the region's numerous hidden waterfalls, which are best explored as part of a guided hike.

Galicia

Galicia is located in the northwest of Spain and encompasses about one-third of the country's entire Atlantic coastline. With a coastline stretching 1,659 kilometers, the region is a perfect holiday destination for water sports enthusiasts, surfers, and divers. The numerous sea inlets of the Atlantic, known as Rias, with their steep cliffs, waterfalls, and rapids provide the ideal setting for adventurous rafting and kayaking tours.

The rugged Atlantic coast of Galicia is also ideal for hiking and climbing. Among other sites, the Rias Altas area features Europe's highest cliffs – the cliffs of the Serra da Capelada, which soar up to 620 meters high.

Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia, is also a destination for around 300,000 pilgrims from all over the world each year. It is home to the reputed burial site of the Apostle James, which marks the end of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Depending on the starting point and route, the Camino de Santiago can stretch from 200 to 1,000 kilometers across the Iberian Peninsula.

There are various routes suitable for different levels of experience and times of the year. The most popular is the Camino Francés from St. Jean Pied de Port, which is 800 kilometers long and of medium difficulty.
