Destinations for adventure holidays in Latvia

Gauja National Park

With an area of more than 90,000 hectares, the Gauja National Park is the largest and oldest nature reserve in Latvia. Located in the heart of the Baltic region, it is home to the picturesque River Gauja, which meanders through deeply carved valleys and dense forests.

Hikers and nature lovers can discover the impressive landscape on a network of trails. Mysterious caves such as Gutmann's Cave and historic castles such as Treyden Castle impress with their rich stories and legends.

If you want to experience the park from a different perspective, you can take a round trip by canoe on the River Gauja. This not only offers the opportunity to admire the natural beauty of the river, but is also a refreshing way to add a special flavour to any visit to Latvia.

In the colder months, the national park transforms into a winter wonderland. The nearby Sigulda - also known as Latvian Switzerland - is particularly popular with winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world.

The facilities in Sigulda are particularly suitable for luge and bobsleighing. Adventurous winter sports enthusiasts can also try ski jumping on the Sigulda ski jumps.

Ventspils

A trip to Ventspils on the west coast of Latvia is a highlight for anyone who wants to experience Baltic culture and nature. The harbour town is famous for its impressive seaport, blue flag beaches and a wealth of family-friendly activities. The city's harbour is one of the busiest in the Baltics and tells the story of Windau's maritime history and importance.

Ventspils presents itself in an artistic light with the CowParade project. Colourful cow sculptures reflecting the city's creativity are scattered throughout the city. These were created by various artists in 2002.

Although some of them were auctioned off as part of the project, around 20 cows can still be found throughout Ventspils. The search for the sculptures is a wonderful opportunity for long bike rides and walks.

In addition to the urban attractions, the unspoilt nature of the surrounding area invites you to explore. The dense pine forests, clean beaches and picturesque dune landscapes are ideal for long walks and relaxation by the sea.

Daugava

Travelling along the Daugava is an impressive experience for nature lovers and history buffs. The river winds its way through the entire country from the Belarusian border to the Baltic Sea at the Gulf of Riga and has more to offer than just scenic highlights. It also tells of the diverse history and culture of the Baltic region.

The Daugava is known for its picturesque riverside landscapes, characterised by lush forests, historic towns and imposing castle ruins. The Latvian capital Riga lies on its banks and combines modern city life with the ancient charm and heritage that the river brings with it.

For adventurers, the Daugava offers a variety of water activities. Whether kayaking, fishing or relaxed boat trips, there is something for everyone here. For those who want to delve deeper into culture and history, the old villages and towns along the river tell stories of times gone by.

As dusk falls, the lights of the towns and villages reflect picturesquely on the surface of the Daugava. Numerous restaurants and bars along the banks invite you to end the day with a view of the tranquil river, savour Latvian delicacies and be enchanted by the magic of the water.

Kemeri-Nationalpark

The Kemeri National Park, located not far from the Latvian coast, is characterised by its impressive raised bogs and mineral-rich springs. The nature reserve is home to diverse bird populations and is therefore particularly popular with birdwatchers.

The park offers a kaleidoscope of colours and shapes. The sunrises and sunsets over the moors offer a particularly breathtaking natural spectacle. The boardwalks  that meander through the moorland allow visitors to experience this unique ecosystem up close without disturbing the delicate flora and fauna. In addition to the moors, the Kemeri National Park includes a number of lakes and forests that are home to numerous animal species.

As the day draws to a close, the mist emerges from the moors, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. In the tranquillity of the park, visitors can spend the night in the rustic accommodation, which offers heavenly peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A moonlit walk accompanied by the gentle sound of nature rounds off an unforgettable holiday in Kemeri National Park.
