Destinations for adventure holidays in Greece

Meteora

A visit to Meteora in the heart of Greece is a must for every adventurer and culture enthusiast. The spectacular landscape is renowned for its gigantic rock formations, atop which 24 centuries-old monasteries and hermitages are perched. The Meteora monasteries are rightfully a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Meteora means "suspended in the air" and describes a unique geological phenomenon: the massive rocks appear from a distance as if they are actually floating in the air. They symbolize not only spiritual grandeur but also attract climbers from all over the world, making it one of Greece's most popular climbing destinations.

A trip to Meteora offers not only thrills at dizzying heights but also a journey into the history and spirituality of Greece.

Visitors can explore six of the monasteries and be inspired by their unique atmosphere. The remaining monasteries are either too dangerous to enter due to the risk of collapse or are too difficult to access, but they can still be admired from a distance.

Zakynthos

The island of Zakynthos, often referred to as "Zante," is located in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece. It is particularly impressive with its dreamy beaches, surrounded by turquoise waters.

The sea is not only beautiful to look at but also hosts a fascinating marine ecosystem, where the protected sea turtle Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle) can be found.

The numerous grottos and caves on the island, where sunlight reflects magically on the water, make the sea around Zakynthos a popular destination for divers and cave climbers.

Zakynthos' most famous spot is undoubtedly Navagio Beach, often referred to as "Shipwreck Beach." This secluded sandy beach is surrounded by high limestone cliffs and features the over 50-year-old wreck of the smuggler ship Panagiotis. This picturesque location is accessible only by boat and offers a unique photo opportunity.

Beyond the beaches, visitors can explore traditional villages, Byzantine churches, and ancient ruins. After a day full of activities, the island's capital, Zakynthos Town, invites you to relax and enjoy its vibrant nightlife, delicious Greek cuisine, and local wines.

Santorini

A visit to Santorini, the jewel of the Aegean, is an unforgettable experience for anyone who wants to enjoy the interplay of nature, history, and culture. The iconic Cycladic island is famous for its stunning sunsets over shimmering waters and the characteristic whitewashed buildings perched on steep cliffs.

Santorini, often referred to as Thira, is the result of a massive volcanic eruption that shaped the island about 3,600 years ago. The Santorini archipelago consists of the remnants of the caldera's rim, still evident in its ring-shaped arrangement. The breathtaking red, white, and black volcanic beaches are testaments to this turbulent past and offer a unique bathing experience.

But Santorini offers more than its spectacular landscapes. The island is home to archaeological marvels such as the ancient city of Akrotiri, a prehistoric counterpart to Pompeii, preserved by volcanic ash.

Lively places like the charming village of Oia also attract visitors from all over the world. Oia is famous for its winding streets and breathtaking sunset views.

A holiday on Santorini offers not only visual delights but also culinary pleasures. The island's volcanic soil contributes to its unique wine production. Visitors should not miss the chance to tour local wineries and taste the famous Vinsanto or Assyrtiko wines. The endless vineyards also provide an ideal backdrop for long walks and hikes.
